Since 2000, Smart Gals has developed original projects for a range of locations and concepts. No space is too grand, no idea too small. We've taken audiences and collaborators to a range of locations: working machine shop in El Segundo, an empty bank building in DTLA, a dusty church basement in Los Feliz, all 12 stops on the original Metro Gold Line.

Reading Preserve Ten Year Anniversary

The Reading Preserve

Treating reading books as an endangered act, the Reading Preserve is a flexible installation designed by artist Edith Abeyta. Sewn together by volunteers at Future Studios in Highland Park, the Reading Preserve has been installed at the West Hollywood Book Fair, Barnsdall Art Park.

The speakeasy

Launched in 2002, The Speakeasy was a literally underground, semi-literary salon where guests could "mix, mingle, swoon, shine", engage in meaningful discussion with authors, architects, scientists, and take home a commemorative bookmark designed by a local artist. The Speakeasy was laid to rest in January, 2011, knowing she'd set a trend, and it was time to move on to other endeavors.
